Some called it dark
Many called it black
All despised it,
Countless belittled it,
And ignored
Its tender body and soul
With cruel indifference.
But no one saw
The radiant pearl within Africa.
From faraway lands,
Stretching my curious eyes,
I march toward Africa,
Immersed in the sweet imagination
Of a dreamlike realm.
To kiss those sleek, black cheeks,
To feel the soothing breeze
That cools the body,
And to revel in the ever-changing,
Diverse air that plays along,
To cuddle in its warm embrace.
I’ve filled my heart
With the longing
To swim in the serene ocean streams
Flowing incessantly
From its fertile bosom.
The birds and animals
Roaming Africa’s proud lands,
The plants growing steadfast
On its unyielding chest,
Invite me,
With a symphony of welcoming tunes.
As far as the eyes can see,
The grassy plains—
The grazing ground for zebras, giraffes, elephants,
And wild buffaloes;
The playful arena for rhinos, ostriches, and lions;
The parade of majestic African leopards,
I imagine their sanctuaries in world-renowned resorts,
Habituated to human guests.
No wonder they call Africa
The Zoo of the World!
Oh, distant Africa,
What must be the lives of—
Those over 800 marginalized,
Vibrant communities?
Blending into a rainbow of colors,
Weaving a garland of beauty—
Even in imagination, I am enchanted.
In the melodic brilliance
Of thousands of languages,
When life’s rhythms play on,
My heart is drawn
To journey toward you.
Becoming the golden destination
Of my sweet dreams,
Africa appears in my thoughts every moment,
And fills my heart constantly.
That unique Africa,
I envision—
The dense veld grasslands,
The native creatures of Maasai Mara,
Where I could forge bonds
And frolic with them
In my dreams.
In the gentle, crystalline flows
Of the Nile, Niger, and Congo rivers,
The Sahara and Kalahari deserts
Might tirelessly quench their eternal thirst.
After a dip
In Lake Victoria’s depths,
I’ll climb Kilimanjaro’s peak,
To gaze upon all of Africa.
And then, I’ll write
A black-and-white poem,
On that unique Africa.
